Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres and Chris Rock are among some of the big names that have graced the stage at Comedy Works, which is located on historic Larimer Square. Since 1981, the acclaimed stand-up comedy club has been Denver’s premier location for the best comedy in the city. The club has been recognized by USA Today as one of the Top Five Comedy Clubs in the country and has been entertaining visitors near and far for an impressive 36 years. To this day, Comedy Works continues to draw large crowds and famous A-list comedians to their two Colorado venues, Larimer Square and Greenwood Village.
Comedy Works Through the Years
What was once known as the Comedy Shoppe, has come a long way since its beginnings. Current owner, Wende Curtis, remembers working as a cocktail waitress at the old Fort Collins Comedy Works location. Curtis worked her way up to manager before heading to Tampa, Florida to help re-vamp another Comedy Works venue. In 1993, Curtis returned to Denver to run the Larimer Square location and help make it what it is today. Curtis eventually bought the business in 2001 and has been successfully running Comedy Works ever since.
Comedy Works Downtown Larimer Square is open seven nights a week and with the two locations puts on over 600 shows annually. Throughout the years, the famous stage has hosted stand-up acts from legendary comedians such as George Lopez, Anjelah Johnson, Bob Saget, and countless others. Curtis has created and maintained wonderful relationships with many comedians over her career. “Dave Chappelle is one of my favorites. He’ll pop in whenever he wants and we have a lot of great memories”. Curtis also mentioned that Tom Segura has been a returning performer for many years. “Tom was just here doing a couple shows and shooting at the Paramount Theatre. Comedy Works is filled all the time with lots of great people and there are always fun surprises.”
In addition to hosting top comedians from all over the country, Comedy Works prides itself on giving new and local comedians a stage to perform on. Comedy Works has built a strong reputation for helping new, up-and-coming comics develop acts and succeed in the national comedy scene. As a result, many of their local prodigies have appeared on The Tonight Show, Comedy Central, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
So, what’s in the works for the 36th year at Comedy Works? Curtis says, “some of the biggest and best stand-up comedy that’s out there”. Curtis mentions that there are many special guests coming this fall to Larimer Square. Comedians such as SNL’s Jay Pharoah, Nick Swardson, Ron Funches, Natasha Leggero, Norm Macdonald and Brad Williams will be gracing the stage and making people laugh throughout September and October.
